Gloom is a card-game i've been playing. The characters you play with in the game are a little too gothic and Edward Gorey-copycat for my taste. So, i've Gloom-ed my friends. Below some cards i've made to amuse myself with.

This one was for Tijdschrift voor Marketing. 

An article in which several marketeers summarize their favourite articles.  So to save us time from having to read all that's been published in their field. So, why not dump all the specialist literature and wait for the summary? 

Back from France!

Dating scams, Irina will never arrive

Here's one I did on dating scams for Parools PS. The article describes how Dutch men meet women through international dating sites. They get scammed by these women declaring them their everlasting love and asking for money. Eventually she'll promise to come to Schiphol airport where lonely men will wait indefinitely. Sometimes they'll even be waiting for the same woman... 

Gay Pride

With Gay Pride coming up in Amsterdam, I did this one for Parools PS magazine. It's about the trouble with finding new love. While there's a lack of fresh gays in the Amsterdam gay community. Everyone just seems to know each other. Especially now you can use Facebook and Grindr. For the image I decided to look for solutions, so I made up Freddy's gay import. 

Airline wines; drinking in the sky

Made for Winelife Magazine about airline wines. Turns out there's a pretty good wine selection aboard many planes, particularly in business class where the wine is served in proper crystal glasses. There's even an award for wines served aboard airplanes, " The Cellars in the Sky award."  Naturally I was inspired by those fascinating Airplane Safety instruction cards. Above the illustration and beneath some details of the main illustration. 

Stepfathers

Right now in Vrouw magazine, for an article about a stepfather trying to win the love of his new stepson. Going to the toy store was his winning move. I tried to keep it sweet, but slightly excessive. Caption: "THIS is your new daddy!" 

Ikrotterdam

Still busy making work with IkRotterdam.nl We've been drawing a lot of dark pub interiors lately but with summer arriving it's time to go outside and draw (as soon as it finally stops raining that is). Here's the lovely car of Branco Delicatessen.

RSI

I'd forgotten all about this one, I made it for an article about RSI last year ;

The new ZONE5300 is out!

In the new Zone5300, all the way in the back this new cartoon I did. " Our child will have to suit the interior."

Sketchbooks in Zone5300

Right now in magazine Zone5300, a spread with picks from my sketchbooks and a little interview. I'm also going to do a cartoon for Zone, the first one appeared in this issue as well!

My first baby card

After saying no against baby-cards for years (sweet & cute is not quite my subject matter), I thought I'd have a go at it for some friends of mine. They gave me carte-blanche and I tried not to shame them. Think I've managed. This is the textless version, front and inside. In the finished one the letters if the name are  in the frames on the front. The inside (see under) is handwritten and naturally contains all their information in the finished version. 

At the library

The Rotterdam Library has opened a new library in the IJsselmonde area for which I, and four other illustrators, have designed the backs of several bookcases. The bookcases stand with their backs to the library entry so you should see them straight away when you walk in. I'll visit to shoot some pictures yet. This one I did on the subject of Psychological Literature.

Speed-dating

Right now in Vrouw magazine, an illustration on speed-dating. I made two versions for the client, one about sex on the first date and a milder version you can see underneath, which is the one they used.

"John had only one question: Did she have sex on the first date?"

"Speed-date dilemma: Dreamdate or pee-break?"

Sketch: Hoping for a swift return to fashion.

From the sketchbook: sketched in a museum in Antwerp. It says " Fashions always return, don't they?" " I'm certainly looking forward to this one coming round again!."

The bitch

I re-used this image for my Christmas card last year but actually it was for an article on bitchiness. The text says " Super-bitch Maria took her professional literature very seriously." She's reading: Why men marry bitches, Machaivalli, Free the bitch within, The taste of power, The lifes and loves of a She devil and a couple of Dutch publications in this line. Right now in Winelife magazine

An article on choosing the right water with your meal and wine. "L'eau du Ordinaire will go very well with your chicken and fries, madam."

Christmas agreements 2011

Another Chrismas one, this was for an article about how to make agreements with your partner to get through Christmas (without bashing each-others heads in). Saying: " No guys, first the signing of the Christmas-contract and Behavioural-norm agreement, then the presents." (click image to see full size btw)

Relationship irritations

This one was for an article about being continuously irritated with your partner. The main illustration says " Bertha's rose-coloured glasses were definitively broken."

Buzzing for Tijdschrift voor Marketing

This is a recent illustration for a marketing magazine. The subject of the article was Buzz* and how marketeers should perceive the data they collect from this. The article was focussed in particular on not knowing who's behind all the chattering and which percentage of their peer-group this represents. So, I concluded quite a small group of people could be really influential, therfore I created;
"Bertus the Megabuzzer soon to be the most influential consumer on earth."

*Buzz: a term used in word-of-mouth marketing is the interaction of consumers and users about a product or service. Nowadays social media such as Facebook and Twitter are also being used to create marketing buzz. 

Divorce inducing vacations

This one I made for an article on vacations and what havoc they can wreak on your marriage. The text says something like "Sun, sea & sand were the last straw".  Actually in Dutch the saying is "the last drop" coming from "the drop that makes the bucket overflow".

Writer Berthold Gunster surprised me by far preferring my sketches over my finished illustrations. I've sketch-illustrated a whole book of his called "Ik ben oke, jij bent een sukkel". Which translates as something like "I'm ok, you are a moron". Although the title suggests differently, this book is actually about how to get along with (difficult) people. Recently Berthold published a new book, Omdenken. I've done a couple of new sketches for it. You can see & buy the books here.

Plaswijck Park. Don't forget to wash your hands.

A quick cross-post from Ikrotterdam. A few weeks ago I visited Plaswijck park for the first time and it was nicer than I thought It'd be. Apart from all the playgrounds they actually have a little zoo with monkeys, huge owls, otters and, as pictured, Guinea Pigs. The sign says "Petting Guinea Pigs is allowed but: Don't pick them up. Don't walk in their residence. Don't feed. Thanks! Don't forget washing your hands."

No more sex

This one is in Vrouw magazine right now, it's for an article on couples who are not having sex anymore.
"No dear, let's wait until the children leave home."

Diabetes

This one I did for a medical magazine, the subject of the article was diabetes (and Hypoglycemia).
The text on the glass naturally says "Break glass in case of emergency".
